You read an ASWB question, look at the four choices, and immediately think: More than one of these could work.

That is often the challenge with BEST questions. The exam isn't necessarily asking which response is possible. It's asking you to identify the best response for the client in the situation presented.

A helpful way to approach these questions is to remember: The BEST answer protects the client and meets the client's needs.

Pay close attention to the wording.

When a question asks what the social worker should do FIRST, you are thinking about sequence. What needs to happen before something else?

When the question asks for the BEST response, shift your thinking to quality and appropriateness.

Ask yourself:

• Which response best protects the client?

• Which response most directly addresses the client's identified needs?

• Which response respects the client's rights and self-determination?

• Which response is appropriate for this particular client and situation?

• Which response reflects sound social work practice?

Don't automatically choose an answer simply because it involves assessment or because it would happen earlier in the helping process. BEST is asking you to identify the strongest response to the situation presented.

Think about the best-case scenario.

The strongest answer should protect the client while also helping meet the client's needs. That means considering the whole client, rather than solving only the most obvious problem in the question.

For example, an answer might technically address a client's immediate concern but unnecessarily remove the client's ability to participate in decision-making. Another answer might respect self-determination but fail to address a serious safety issue.

Neither represents the best response.

The stronger choice is generally the one that balances the client's safety, needs, rights, preferences, and well-being while remaining consistent with the social worker's professional responsibilities.

When you're stuck between two answers, ask:

Which of these creates the best outcome for the client while protecting the client and meeting their needs?

That question can help you move beyond choosing an answer that merely sounds correct and identify the response that represents the BEST social work practice.

ASWB questions can become much easier when you stop asking, “Which answer sounds right?” and start asking: “Which answer best serves this client?”

For BEST questions, keep this simple framework in mind:

Protect the client + Meet the client's needs + Respect the client's rights = Look for the BEST response.

The goal isn't to memorize an answer for every possible scenario. It's to develop the professional judgment to recognize what strong social work practice looks like when several choices seem reasonable.
