Many ASWB questions include several answers that seem correct. The challenge isn't finding a good answer—it's identifying the best answer based on the information provided.
One of the fastest ways to improve your score is learning how to eliminate answers that don't fit the situation.
Before selecting an answer, pause and ask:
Eliminate answers that require another professional or go beyond the information provided.
If important information is missing, the correct answer is often to assess before intervening.
If there is an immediate safety concern, protecting the client comes before additional assessment.
Instead of searching for the right answer immediately, cross out answers that:
Skip the assessment process.
Ignore safety concerns.
Fall outside the social worker's scope of practice.
Add facts that are not included in the question.
Sounds helpful, but doesn't answer what is being asked.
Often, removing two incorrect choices makes the best answer much easier to recognize.
The ASWB exam rewards clinical reasoning—not memorization. Learning to eliminate incorrect answers can improve your confidence and help you make better decisions under pressure.
